Moûtiers, located in Savoie (Tarentaise valley), is the gateway to the 3 Vallées resorts of Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Les Menuires, Val Thorens, Méribel and Courchevel. Moûtiers is the ideal place to stay for a walk in the Vanoise National Park or for treatments in the thermal resorts of Brides-les-Bains and La Léchère.
Its geographic position makes it easy to explore Tarentaise natural, cultural, architectural and gastronomic heritage.
Moûtiers is also more than just a station to change trains (though it welcomes no fewer than 360,000 travellers a year!). Just 3 minutes from the train station, take the time to explore the historic town centre with its museums, Saint-Pierre cathedral, the pedestrianised street with its restaurants and shops. It’s an unmissable place for shopping, imagine… a gourmet break on a sunny terrace… relaxing on the banks of the Isère river, in a square or a park, there are so many to choose from, each one prettily maintained and planted with flowers.
The town is filled with real historical and heritage gems thanks to its status as the capital of the Tarentaise since the 11th century A.D. Moûtiers was also home to the former archbishop’s palace and somewhere archbishops who were also Tarentaise nobles exercised both their spiritual and earthly power.
Moûtiers also boasts an exceptional cultural heritage with the presence of a thousand-year-old cathedral, the former Archbishop’s palace, museums and art galleries, historical royal salt beds…
In 2018, the ‘EternellesCrapules’ Festival kickstarted the creation of the murals that decorate almost thirty of the town’s walls, real works of contemporary art that you can discover as you make your way along our Street Art trail.
